Stem-cell-growing surface enables bone repair

ScienceDaily (May 23, 2012) University of Michigan researchers have proven that a special surface, free of biological contaminants, allows adult-derived stem cells to thrive and transform into multiple cell types. Their success brings stem cell therapies another step closer. To prove the cells' regenerative powers, bone cells grown on this surface were then transplanted into holes in the skulls of mice, producing four times as much new bone growth as in the mice without the extra bone cells. An embryo's cells really can be anything they want to be when they grow up: organs, nerves, skin, bone, any type of human cell. Adult-derived "induced" stem cells can do this and better. Because the source cells can come from the patient, they are perfectly compatible for medical treatments. In order to make them, Paul Krebsbach, a professor of biological and materials sciences in the School of Dentistry, said, "We turn back the clock, in a way. A growth factor isolated from human stem cells shows promising results in a mouse model of multiple sclerosis. Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) have become a popular potential therapy for numerous autoimmune and neurological disorders. But while these bone marrow-derived stem cells have been studied in great detail in the dish, scientists know little about how they modulate the immune system and promote tissue repair in living organisms. Now, one research team has uncovered a molecular mechanism by which hMSCs promote recovery in a mouse model of multiple sclerosis (MS). According to research, published online Sunday (May 20) in Nature Neuroscience, a growth factor produced by hMSCs fights MS in two ways: blocking a destructive autoimmune response and repairing neuronal damage. The finding could help advance ongoing clinical trials testing hMSCs as a therapy for MS. The researchers have identified a unique factor that has surprisingly potent activity mediating neuron repair, said Jacques Galipeau, a cell therapy researcher at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, who was not involved in the research. TORONTO Routinely screening men for prostate cancer with PSA tests can result in far more harm than good, says a U.S. expert panel in a recommendation against the practice that is sure to fuel continued debate over the issue. On Monday, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force released its final recommendation, advising against routine PSA blood tests to detect possible prostate cancer, the third most common cause of cancer death in North American males after lung and colorectal cancer. Having an elevated level of PSA, or prostate-specific antigen, can flag the presence of cancer. But it can also be a sign of a benign enlarged prostate or infection, and most men who have a biopsy in response to an abnormal PSA test dont end up having cancer. Often when prostate cancer is found through screening, the tumour is small and too slow-growing to be harmful, and many men end up dying of another cause. Yet theres no way of knowing which tumours are potentially deadly requiring aggressive treatment and which are not. Almost all men with PSA-detected prostate cancer opt to receive treatment. A study by the Centre for Health and Prevention Studies at New York University has found that the use of tik leads to dangerous sexual behaviour. Studies have shown that tik users have more sexual partners. (David Harrison, M&G) The street drug crystal methamhpetamine, known as tik in South Africa, increases the chance of men who have sex with men to contract HIV by 400%, according to a US study. But according to Hetta Gouse, a neuropsychologist in the psychiatry and mental health department at the University of Cape Town (UCT), the impact of tik addiction on HIV infections in South Africa is likely to extend far beyond this group. While men who have sex with men are the main consumers of the substance in America, in South Africa it is also used in high numbers by heterosexual men and women. The figures are the highest in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Gouse is conducting a study on the rate of HIV infections among tik users in the Western Cape. The pressure on men from having to perform on cue can result in impotence and, in a significant number of cases, adultery, a new study has confirmed. After six months of the stress of so-called timed intercourse, at least four out of 10 men suffered erectile dysfunction or impotence, and many would try to avoid having sex with their partners at the allotted time, researchers said. Even more disturbingly, the rigours of obligation lead to one in 10 men having extramarital sex, according to new research. Timed intercourse during the fertile window of a womans menstrual cycle has been widely adopted and is frequently prescribed by fertility specialists to help couples trying to conceive. Products designed to predict the optimum time to have sex are also commonly used. But having such strictly timed sex can be stressful. The researchers of the study set out to investigate the effects on men, which, they say, has not previously been fully investigated. This weekend they urged doctors to warn couples about the downsides to the technique. POM Wonderful Pom Wonderful Pomegranate products may be loaded with antioxidants, but there's not sufficient evidence that it can treat, prevent, or reduce the risk of specific conditions such as heart disease or erectile dysfunction according to a ruling handed down by Chief Administrative Law Judge Michael Chappell. The ruling upholds a Federal Trade Commission complaint we reported on before that charged POM Wonderful with violating federal law by making deceptive disease prevention and treatment claims. According to Judge Chappell's decision, excerpted here, POM Wonderful's violations of federal advertising law were misleading because their claims "pertained to serious diseases and dysfunction of the body, including cancer." And "reasonable consumers" would interpret the advertisements for POM products as claims that drinking eight ounces of POM Juice daily could treat, prevent or reduce the risk of certain diseases. Text Message Prescription Reminders Significantly Improve Patient Adherence to Oral Diabetes Medication

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- A new study published in the May issue of Clinical Therapeutics shows that patients who participate in a text message prescription reminder program have significantly higher adherence to chronic oral medications than those in a control group. The study of 580 employer-sponsored and Medicare members of a national pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) found that patients receiving text message reminders had better medication adherence rates than those who did not 85 percent vs. 77 percent. The adherence rates for those taking chronic anti-diabetes medication were even higher 91 percent vs. 82 percent. Medication adherence is defined as the extent to which patients take their medications as instructed by a physician. This is the first large-scale study in the United States to examine if a text message program providing medication-specific reminders could increase adherence. Previous research has shown a similar positive impact; however, these studies were smaller in scope, often with fewer than 100 participants, and focused on homogenous patient groups, such as those who are being treated for the same disease. Stem cells have assumed near-mythical status in the popular imagination as a possible cure for every disease under the sun. But while public attention has focused on their potential in regenerative medicine, stem cells have quietly gained a foothold in drug development a move that may hail a huge but unheralded shake-up of the biological sciences. I think there are tremendous parallels to the early days of recombinant DNA in this field, says James Thomson, director of regenerative biology at the Morgridge Institute for Research in Madison, Wisconsin, and one of the founders of Cellular Dynamics International, also in Madison. I dont think people appreciated what a broad-ranging tool recombinant DNA was in the middle '70s." At the same time, he says, they underestimated the difficulty of using it in treatments. Now stem cells are in a similar situation, he says, and although therapeutic use is likely to come to fruition eventually, people underappreciate how broadly enabling a research tool it is, he says.
