Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2012

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/bfc499e5/analysis_of_the_eu) has announced the addition of Frost & Sullivan's new report "Analysis of the European Multiple Sclerosis Market" to their offering. European MS Market in Urgent Need of Novel Treatment and Diagnostic Options Limited awareness about the disease and its overall occurrence and progression among end-users is hampering the European multiple sclerosis (MS) market. This is being exacerbated by the limited availability of accurate diagnostic tools. There is, therefore, an immediate need for innovative and enhanced therapeutic and diagnostic tools that support improved diagnosis and expand the range of treatment options. The rising number of people suffering from MS is resulting in higher demand for related therapeutics, notes the analyst of this research. This, coupled with strong pipeline development, is pushing robust growth in the overall market. MS is characterised as a chronic disease, commonly diagnosed in patients between 20-50 years of age. It affects more than 2.5 million people across the world, with Europe accounting for nearly 550,000 cases. Significant research is currently underway to efficiently treat MS. Innovative treatment therapies, including biologics and oral drugs, are favouring market prospects. Refined drug delivery technologies, mode of drug delivery (oral or injectable), and several other factors will … Continue reading

University stem cell programs under attack

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2012

In light of ongoing disputes over the Universitys embryonic stem cell research efforts, the state House Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education passed a budget recommendation Friday seeking to strip the University of some of its funding from the state. The recommendation comes more than two weeks after University President Mary Sue Colemans critical remarks to the committee about its budget formulation, and stems from a disagreement over the type of information the University should report to the legislators. Republican members of the committee insist that the University must provide specific data on the research, while University officials have resisted those efforts. This year, instead of supplying the data points the committee requested, the University compiled what Cynthia Wilbanks, the Universitys vice president for government relations, called a packet of press releases and scientific journal articles on the Universitys embryonic stem cell research. University spokesman Rick Fitzgerald said the University sent the package to legislators to provide them with a more in depth look at the research going on at the University. It gave the legislature a deeper, broader, richer understanding of the stem cell research than a simple list of five or six numbers, Fitzgerald said. Wilbanks added that one … Continue reading

Research and Markets: Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Advances & Applications (Updated & Expanded Version, 2012)

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2012

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/f51594d7/mesenchymal_stem_c) has announced the addition of the "Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Advances & Applications (Updated & Expanded Version, 2012)" report to their offering. Analysis of global grant activity, scientific publication rates, and patent applications reveal that research activity involving mesenchymal stem cells increased 58% year-over-year from 2008 to 2009, and 112% from 2009 to 2010. Of most interest is that this rate of growth accelerated in 2011, making mesenchymal stem cells the fastest growing area of stem cell research. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent stem cells that can differentiate into a variety of cell types, including osteoblasts, chondrocytes, myocytes, adipocytes, beta-pancreatic islets cells, and potentially, neuronal cells. MSCs are of intense therapeutic interest because they represent a population of cells with the potential to treat a wide range of acute and degenerative diseases. MSCs are advantageous over other stem cells types for several reasons. First, they avoid the ethical issues that surround embryonic stem cell research. Second, repeated studies have found that human MSCs are immuno-privileged, and therefore, represent an advantageous cell type for allogenic transplantation, reducing the risks of rejection and complications of transplantation. Recently, there have also been significant advances in the use of autologous … Continue reading

Cancer stem cell vaccine in development shows antitumor effect

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2012

Public release date: 2-Apr-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Jeremy Moore Jeremy.Moore@aacr.org 215-446-7109 American Association for Cancer Research PHILADELPHIA -- Scientists may have discovered a new paradigm for immunotherapy against cancer by priming antibodies and T cells with cancer stem cells, according to a study published in Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research. "This is a major breakthrough in immunotherapy research because we were able to use purified cancer stem cells to generate a vaccine, which strengthened the potency of antibodies and T cells that selectively targeted cancer stem cells," said Qiao Li, Ph.D., a research assistant professor in the department of surgery at the University of Michigan. Cancer stem cells are tumor cells that remain present, and ultimately resistant, after chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Scientists disagree on whether these cells have unique properties, but those who support the uniqueness idea have argued that these cells regenerate the tumors that lead to relapse. Despite the similar name, cancer stem cells are distinct from embryonic stem cells, and the two avenues of research are separate. For the current study, Li and colleagues extracted cancer stem cells from two immunocompetent mouse models and used them … Continue reading

Patient Beware: When Stem Cells Harm

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2012

Early in March 2012, 77-year-old Richard Poling entered a clinic in Bonita Springs, Fla., for a stem cell treatment to help with age-related heart and lung conditions. Poling, an avid golfer and family man from Indiana, had sought several conventional therapies to alleviate his suffering with unsatisfactory results and was desperate for a treatment that would allow him to enjoy the pleasures of life again. Shortly after receiving his alleged treatment, however, Poling went into cardiac arrest at the clinic and died. According to investigators, the alleged stem cell treatment Poling received was not approved by the FDA. According to multiple reports, the local cardiologist who conducted the treatment removed fat cells from Poling's abdomen and sent them to a lab that claimed to process and isolate adult stem cells from a patient's own fat. A few hours later, a second procedure was allegedly performed at the same clinic in which Poling had the stem cells injected back into his bloodstream for their regenerative properties. The entire process took one day, and during the hours between the procedures, Poling enjoyed lunch out with his family. Poling was the second patient to die under the same doctor's care in the last … Continue reading

Stem cell institute to work with foreign agencies

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2012

California's $3 billion stem cell agency, now more than 7 years old, has joined research partnerships with science and health agencies in eight foreign countries, the San Francisco institute announced. The agreements call for collaboration in efforts aimed at speeding stem cell research from the laboratory to the hospital, where researchers hope that basic human cells will be programmed to treat scores of human degenerative diseases. Research partnerships between American and foreign stem cell scientists are encouraged, but the California institute's funds would only be spent within the state, institute officials said. Alan Trounson, president of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, signed agreements with stem cell funding agencies in Brazil and Argentina last week, he said Thursday. "Both Brazil and Argentina have strong and robust stem cell research communities in basic science and transitional clinical science, which should create exciting synergies with many scientists in California," Trounson said in a statement. He has signed similar pacts with stem cell agencies in Canada, Britain, France, Spain, Australia, Japan, China and Indiana. The California institute was created in 2004 after Proposition 71, a $3 billion bond issue, was approved by California voters at a time when use of federal funds was … Continue reading

Drugs charges: Cousins out on bail

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2012

Ben Cousins is leaving court after he appeared on drugs charges. Ben Cousins' lawyer said it was unlikely his client would face jail even if convicted as the prominent ex-football star made a brief appearance in a Perth court on drugs charges this morning. Cousins was accompanied by his father Bryan and sat silently beside his lawyer Michael Tudori during the hearing at Perth Magistrates Court today. The 33-year-old was arrested on Tuesday night at Esperance Airport, where police were waiting for him to arrive on a flight from Perth, charged with possession of 4.56 grams of methylamphetamine. Advertisement: Story continues below Personal struggle: Ben Cousins. Photo: Joe Armao He was not required to enter a plea, and the matter has been adjourned until June 27 for a committal mention in Perth District Court. Cousins' bail conditions were amended today and he was no longer required to reside at the drug rehabilitation centre Teen Challenge in Esperance, where he had been heading at the time of his arrest. The residential condition was deleted on the basis that Cousins pay a $2000 surety. Mr Tudori told the court that it was unnecessary because he was not likely to face jail time … Continue reading

Chasing cheaper cancer drugs

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2012

LONDON In a nondescript suburb south of London, tucked away behind a big hospital, Paul Workman and fellow scientists are celebrating victory in the "World Cup" of cancer drug research for their work in discovering a stream of new medicines. But the win is bitter-sweet. One of the new drugs behind the coveted prize from the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) has been deemed too costly to use in state-run British hospitals like the one next door. It is a stark example of the pricing crisis now facing cancer medicines across the globe. In developed and developing countries alike, patients and governments are struggling to pay for modern drugs that are revolutionising cancer care but may cost tens of thousands of dollars a year for each patient. "It's very frustrating," says Workman, who heads up the drug discovery unit at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), which is funded in large part by charities. What is needed, he believes, is a new model that takes advantage of the highly specific nature of modern targeted therapies to slash drug development timelines and costs. In the long term, Workman is convinced that will happen. But for the moment the world is … Continue reading

Order Your RX Online?

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2012

I came across an article the other day with a warning for those who order prescription medication online. Apparently, buying prescription drugs on the Internet can save both time and money, but there is a potential risk that you may not consider. Carnegie Mellon University, a private, internationally ranked research university, conducted a study and found that when searching for drug information, they were redirected to questionable and/ or illicit pharmacies almost a third of the time. Using estimates of the popularity of drug-related search terms and the payment-processing websites used by pharmacies, Carnegie Mellon researchers report that search-engine manipulation is considerably more efficient than email spam. According to SELF magazine, 25 percent of medication errors are caused by mix-ups with drugs that have similar names. Safe surfing is certainly the lesson here if you want to avoid contaminated, counterfeit or dangerous medications. In a time when so much online information is questionable, it is not a surprise that shady sites could show up during any search. But how do you know? Who do you trust? It is recommended that you search the website of a particular online pharmacy instead of typing in the name of the drug in large … Continue reading
