Boston-area teams assemble ‘encyclopedia’ of cancer cells’ vulnerability to drugs

Posted: Published on March 29th, 2012

By Carolyn Y. Johnson, Globe Staff Two Boston-area teams have assembled massive encyclopedias that predict the vulnerability of hundreds of different subtypes of cancer to dozens of drugs. The massive catalogs, being made freely available Wednesday, are an important step toward the routine personalizing of cancer care, in which patients will receive treatments tailored to the specific genetic changes that influence a tumors response to drug regimens. Already, the data, which correlate cancer cells genetic profiles with their sensitivity to medications, are being used to design more sophisticated early-stage clinical trials of drugs. The research has also suggested at least one unexpected treatment that can be rapidly tested that a drug used for breast and ovarian cancers may be effective against Ewings sarcoma, a childhood bone cancer. Previous attempts to identify drugs most effective against specific cancers used far fewer tumor types, or cell lines, and the new catalogs more accurately represent the enormous genetic diversity of the disease. This is an invaluable resource, and in fact the term encyclopedia is appropriate. Its a monumental amount of work, which will be useful and used in the years to come, said Dr. Pier Paolo Pandolfi, scientific director of the Beth Israel … Continue reading

According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP), Verna P. Prater, 60, of Kemmerer was westbound on US Higway 30 when for unknown reasons, her vehicle went off the right side of the roadway where it struck a delineator post. The WHP report then stated that Prater then over steered the vehicle to the left which caused the vehicle to come back onto the highway and cross the center line going in the eastbound lane of travel. Once in the eastbound lane, it struck the other vehicle head-on. Prater, a resident of Kemmerer, was driving a 2000 Honda Civic. She was declared dead at the scene. Lutz Pharmacy sold to Minnesota-based drug company

Posted: Published on March 29th, 2012

Lutz Pharmacy and Professional Compounding in Altoona announced today that they have sold the business to Austin, Minn.-based Astrup Drug, Inc. Gene and Susan Lutz have operated the pharmacy, located at 120 8th Street SE, since 1974. In the early 1980s the Lutzes began serving long term care facilities and the needs of their patients. In 2007 they added a second pharmacy (Lutz Long Term Care Pharmacy) to focus on the long-term care side of their business. In a news release, the owners said they expect to continue to do some pharmacy-related work and plan to volunteer for some medical mission work and continue their involvement in national and international pharmacy organizations. The Lutzes said they wanted to find a buyer that would not close the business, since its common for national chains to buy out the prescription list and close the pharmacy. Lutz Pharmacy will become Astrups 13th location in Iowa and Minnesota. The acquisition of Lutz Pharmacy and Professional Compounding and Lutz Long Term Care expands our ability to serve long term care facilities and provides us with an opportunity to add a more robust compounding practice, said Tim Gallagher, COO at Astrup Drug, Inc. Invasive treatment strategy may increase survival for patients with certain neuromuscular disorder

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2012

Public release date: 27-Mar-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Karim Wahbi, M.D. karim.wahbi@cch.aphp.fr JAMA and Archives Journals Patients with a cardiac irregularity and myotonic dystrophy type 1 (a severe neuromuscular disorder with a high risk of sudden death) who received an invasive treatment strategy that included testing of their heart's electrical conduction system and if needed, implantation of a device such as a pacemaker, had an associated higher rate of 9-year survival compared to patients treated noninvasively, according to a study in the March 28 issue of JAMA. Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM 1) is the most common inherited neuromuscular disease in adults, with an incidence of 1 in 8,000. "The manifestations of the disease include muscle weakness, myotonia [abnormally long muscular contractions], multiple endocrine disorders, respiratory insufficiency, and cardiac abnormalities. The prevention of sudden death is central to patient management," according to background information in the article. Progression of conduction system (special muscle fibers that conduct electrical impulses throughout the muscle of the heart) disease to complete atrioventricular block (impairment of the conduction between the atria and ventricles of the heart) is the presumed cause of sudden death in a high proportion of patients. Permanent cardiac pacing … Continue reading

Autism mandates pass committee, head to state House of Representatives

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2012

LANSING A state legislative committee approved a package of bills that would require insurance companies to pay for autism diagnosis and treatment. The package passed the full Senate earlier this month. The bi-partisan package requires insurance companies to cover treatment for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) the same way it covers physical illnesses. The bills also create an incentive program and matching fund, allowing insurers to recoup some of the costs of providing treatment. The three bills comprising the package passed 7-0, with state Reps. Maureen Stapleton, D-Detroit, and Dian Slavens, D-Canton, passing on each vote. Slavens and Stapleton both tried unsuccessfully to amend the bills to include a provision for mental health parity, which would require insurers to cover all mental health disorders. The Michigan Chamber of Commerce, Small Business Association of Michigan and Economic Alliance of Mid-Michigan testified in opposition to the bills. The business-backed Chamber and union-backed Economic Alliance both argued that coverage should be part of the collective bargaining process; all three groups said the mandate would raise the cost of doing business and make the state a less attractive place to start a business. None of the three had data on how many of their members … Continue reading

Stroke victim 'left for seven hours'

Stanislawa Gunther suffered a stroke on January 3 and was taken to Flinders Medical Centre where she wasn't seen by a doctor for almost seven hours. Her daughter Eva Gac says her mother has suffered permanent disability as a result. Picture: Tait Schmaal Source: AdelaideNow THE family of a woman who waited seven hours in emergency for treatment after suffering a stroke say she suffered permanent damage Stanislawa Gunther, 82, suffered a stroke on January 3 and now has limited movement on her left side. Her daughter, Eva Gac, believes Flinders Medical Centre was negligent in the treatment of her mother and has demanded a full investigation. Health Minister John Hill has defended the treatment process, while the hospital said the delay had no impact on her outcome. But Mrs Gac disagrees. She said a thrombolysis - treatment which can prevent permanent damage from stroke - could have been administered. "My mother was left waiting in a cubicle from around 5pm until midnight and was not checked by doctors," Mrs Gac said. "It is my understanding that stroke patients have priority in the emergency department, like heart attacks." She is speaking publicly following reports of ambulances vecoming bottlenecked at FMC … Continue reading

New Stroke Recovery Option

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2012

(Ivanhoe Newswire)-- There is only one stroke treatment option available today and with such a high rate of individuals suffering from strokes, many would agree that a new solution is necessary. Now researchers from Stanford University have shown that by removing a matching set of molecules responsible for assisting in regulation of the brain's capacity for forming and breaking connections between nerve cells could greatly increase recovery from a stroke just days after occurring. Currently the only available stroke treatment is called tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA. The issue with tPA is that it must be administered within a few hours of a stroke to be effective, and patients' brains must first be scanned to determine whether this treatment is appropriate. Furthermore, while tPA limits the initial damage caused by a stroke, it doesn't help the brain restore or replace lost connections between nerve cells, which is necessary for recovery. For the study, researchers used mice that had been genetically bioengineered to lack certain molecules that a Stanford researcher had previously shown to play a major role in modulating the ease with which important nerve-cell connections are made, strengthened, weakened or destroyed in the brain. The molecules in question include … Continue reading
