WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Terry Hertges was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease about four years ago. Three years ago she started a support group for other people also living with Parkinson's.

"It's a lot different talking to your doctor than it is talking to someone who has Parkinson's," said Terry Hertges.

Hertges said when she was diagnosed she felt alone, but she knew she wasn't alone, which is why she wanted to start this group.

The Parkinson's Disease Support Group isn't just for people with Parkinson's.

It's also for caregivers, friends or anyone who just wants to learn more about the disease.

"Chronic, progressive neurological disease, which means it gets worse, not better. We have shakiness, stiffness," said Hertges.

Nearly one million people in the U.S. live with Parkinson's. The cause is unknown, although doctors do know a decrease in dopamine leads to difficulty controlling movement. There is no cure for Parkinson's, but treatment options are available.

Through the monthly meetings, Terry Hertges hopes people learn more about Parkinson's and meet others also living with the disease.

"Every time I help somebody, I feel better," said Terry Hertges.
