CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City Office of Senior Citizens Affairs is planning to run a cooperative pharmacy among the 60,000 elderly persons in the city as a way to make their remaining years more meaningful and fruitful.

Rolando Dodong Llaguno said if each of the senior citizens would just contribute an amount for their capital investment, he is sure that their cooperative can easily start the pharmacy business.

According to Llaguno, aside from availing cheaper prices for medicines and drugs, the senior citizens may also earn from their shares of the cooperatives income.

Llaguno said he will work hard for the realization of his plan and he is hopeful that his fellow senior citizens would not hesitate to give their shares. Those who give bigger shares of stocks will also have much bigger proceeds.

When Llaguno was appointed by Mayor Michael Rama to head the OSCA several months ago, he quickly announced his plan to help the senior citizens to earn by encouraging them to join cooperatives.

Llaguno claims he has knowledge on how to run a cooperative that is why he wishes that it can be implemented among the senior citizens organizations in the city.

Each of the senior citizens in Cebu City will receive an allowance of P7,000from City Hall this year. The P3,000 was released last June 11, while the remaining P4,000 will be released by December.

Rama had also announced that he will give another P2,000 for the senior citizens allowance next year making it P9,000.

Siyaro na man sab og dili sila makagahin sa paghatag og gamayng puhonan para sa kooperatiba nga makuha man gihapon nila ang ilang share nga may interest kon gusto na sila nga moundang, (Surely they will be able to contribute a little amount as capital for the cooperative because they will be able to get their shares plus interest if they want to stop.) Llaguno said.

Llaguno thought of the creation of a drugstore for the senior citizens, which will be made through a cooperative, after several senior citizens complained some drugstores do not comply with the law requiring them to grant a 20 percent discount to senior citizens. - THE FREEMAN
