Over five tonnes of seized illegal substances with a US market value of 158 million dollars was destroyed. Police vehicles transported the mass of confiscated drugs to a heavily guarded police base in Lima where they were later burned. [Wilfredo Pedraza, Peruvian Minister of the Interior]: "We are here at the incineration, the fifth incineration of the year, and in this category we have broken a record in the seizure of cocaine paste, cocaine, marijuana, and the eradication of coca leaf crops - for these reasons I think this has been an interesting year for the fight against drugs, and it highlights the will of the government to tackle drug trafficking head on."
