ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- One local chemistry teacher is voicing his concerns over potential changes to science class requirements within Rochester Public Schools.

Chuck Handlon has taught chemistry for more than 30 years and currently teaches at Rochester's Century High School.

He opposes recent discussions by the Rochester Public School Board aiming to potentially alter some required science classes for high school students.

Instead of requiring biology, chemistry, and physics, the board has discussed requiring students to chose between biology, chemistry, and physics courses.

Handlon claims this could potentially violate education statutes.

"It's really important that we have a scientifically literate citizens. By reducing the standards, which were put there so that all students have these common experiences, it is going to result in students not being able to understand the science that they will have to be involved with," said Handlon.

After Handlon made his public comments Tuesday night, Superintendent Michael Muoz emphasized that he did not believe the changes would violate any requirements currently in place.
