Peep, peep, peep.

Local residents have a chance to learn about chickens, and even hold recently hatched chicks, during an embryology program at Loma Colorado Main Library this month.

Galloping Grace Youth Ranch is providing an incubator with seven eggs people can see at the reference desk through April 29, as well as leading three Wednesday family programs to let attendees meet, hold and learn about chickens.

A lot of kids dont necessarily know where their food is coming from, said Galloping Grace Ranch Manager Renee Griffith.

Library Youth Services Manager Deirdre Caparoso said the programming would let people see and learn about chickens in a relaxed, hands-on setting.

The collective experience of waiting for and watching the chicks hatch will create a greater sense of community, Caparoso said. The Embryology Program will help identify Rio Rancho Public Libraries as beneficial community centers offering enriching and innovative programs. Experiencing new life in the library will bring sheer delight to the library, its customers and Rio Rancho.

People can look at the eggs, which have a 21-day incubation period, any time the library is open.

Griffith said a web camera would allow people to keep an eye on the eggs via YouTube, as well. She expected to have a specific web address closer to the time the eggs went to the library.
