Santa Passes Out Clean Needles for Christmas
CitiWide Harm Reduction http://www.citiwidehr.org is a groundbreaking needle-exchange program in the South Bronx that not only distributes clean needles to local drug users (mostly unstably housed or homeless) to combat HIV and hepatitis C. CitiWide offers a 7-day, all-day safe space where 3000 adult program participants annually can access healthy meals, showers, laundry, counseling and education, rapid HIV and HCV testing, support groups, health care, housing placement, drug-treatment placement, job referral, and much more. We work hard to keep the community safe and conduct daily community outreach and clean up. We are actively involved with the local NYPD Community Council and Community Board, and are very engaged with our neighbors and other community stakeholders to improve the health and safety of the South Bronx. Citiwide, founded in 1995 in a Church basement, has played a key role in bringing down HIV rates among local drug users from 54 percent to about 4% (and that #39;s NY health department data). We offer many bilingual services since about a third of our clients speak only Spanish, and we also offer special services for women, sex workers, gay men and transgender people. This year we completed a transformational renovation that has turned the drop-in center into a bright, clean, happy 3-story center in the middle of a very poor, marginalized neighborhood.
