Seminar at Manipal

The Manipal University unit of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, in conjunction with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the Division of Clinical Embryology, KMC, Manipal, conducted a national seminar on Assisted Reproductive Technology Challenges, concerns and ethics here recently.

The lectures were delivered by speakers which included Vijay Kumar Bhujang (United States), Russell DSouza (Australia), Anand Ramakrishna (United Kingdom) and Shobana Mohandas (India).

A panel discussion on Sharing Experiences in Assisted Reproductive Technology was held.

Mr. DSouza, Asia Pacific Chair of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, introduced the ethical issues that arise in medically assisted reproduction with regards to the biological parents, the surrogate parent and the child.

Mr. Ramakrishna, from the United Kingdom, stressed on the evolution of various legislation regarding the right of the conceived child to know the identity of the parent.
