The Star Valley Independent has been covering the many communities of the area for over 110 years without missing a single edition. Do you ever wonder what made the news this week a long time ago? Take a look at what made the pages of the newspaper 25, 50, 75 and 100 years ago during this calendar week of the year.

25-years ago:

In stark contrast to last years heavy runoff, the water supply outlook for this summer is already looking dismal. Snow pack and precipitation in Star Valley and throughout the inter-mountain west are well below normal according to reports . . . The watershed content of snow pack on the Salt River Water shed is 20-percent of normal as of April 29, 1987.

Condemnation of Old Buildings Possible under State Laws, Residents RemindedThe Town of Aftons annual Clean-up Week made good progress before rainy weather set in Wednesday afternoon, with much being accomplished toward beautification of the town. . . . A number of old buildings have been removed in the town, but some still remain that do not enhance the view.

Another law pertaining to beautification that is often ignored in the town of Afton . . . states that it shall be unlawful for any person to keep or permit to be kept any sheep, cattle, or horses within the town of Afton . . . Unless there is provided a minimum of 25 square rods of land surface for each animal within the enclosure where in the animals are kept, maintained, or pastured.

75-years ago:

May Day, Child Health DayThe National slogan for May Day this year is: Health Protection for Every Child. Let us add to that: And Every Mother. Health is much more than mere freedom from disease. Health is a positive ideal of vigor and efficiency. -C. E. A. Winslow. What does health protection for mothers and children mean . . . 5.) It means careful attention to community sanitation, especially water and milk supplies and disposal of sewage.

Martin Schwab went to Kemmerer a few days ago and brought in a big new Four Wheel Drive 5 ton truck to be used for road maintenance in Star Valley. . . . In addition to this truck, a new power controlled grader was brought in. With this new equipment it will be easier to keep the valley roads properly maintained.
