South College is another step closer to full accreditation for its School of Pharmacy.

The pharmacy program recently received formal notice that it had been granted Candidate status by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education.

The three-year pharmacy program, which admitted its first doctorate class in February 2012, is on track to receive full accreditation by January 2015, South College President Steve South said.

"This is an important step for incoming students," South said. "They know that once they graduate they will be able to sit for the licensing exam."

Dr. Walter Fitzgerald, founding dean of the pharmacy school, said Candidate status gives students the same rights as graduates of fully accredited programs.
