For many in Cheshire, The Spirit of Christmas at Chester Cathedral signals the start of the festive season.

Now in its 24th year, this spectacular star-studded event has seen an array of popular television and film actors take to the stage to perform festive readings and songs.

Previous celebrities have included Jim Broadbent, Alison Steadman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Carey Mulligan and Imelda Staunton to name just a few!

The concert is hosted by Matthew Kelly of Stars in Their Eyes fame and is in support of the Neuromuscular Centre in Winsford, a charity that provides a range of specialist services and unique opportunities for people with muscular dystrophy, a progressive and debilitating muscle wasting condition with no known cure.

Matthew brings along his friends from stage and screen, and this year he will be joined by David Morrissey, Selia Cadell, Robert Glenister and Kate Fahy*.

David Morrissey is an actor, screenwriter, producer and director known for playing the critically acclaimed roles of Stephen Collins in State of Play (2003) and Gordon Brown in The Deal (2003) which earned him a Best Actor award from the Royal Television Society. Recently he has portrayed The Governor in The Walking Dead from 2012 and Inspector Tyador Borlu in BBC2 Drama The City and the City (2018).

Selina Cadell has most recently starred as the quirky and lovelorn Mrs Sally Tishell in Doc Martin. She has enjoyed a diverse career, spanning television and films in both comedic and dramatic roles, best known for Wild Child (2008), Match Point (2005) and her television sitcom roles as Dorothy Crowther in The Amazing Mrs Pritchard (2006) and the Dean Mieke Miedema in Lab Rats since 2008.

Robert Glenister has an impressive career spanning three decades and is probably best known for his roles as con man Ash Three Socks Morgan in the BBC TV series Hustle (2004) and Nicholas Blake in the BBC drama Spooks. Most recently Robert played Grieves in the TV show Curfew (2019) and George Kirkbright in Cold Feet (2017). He also played the Irish-American mob boss in Ben Afflecks 2016 film Live by Night and has made regular appearances in George Gently, Spartacus and Only Fools and Horses.

Kate Fahy is known for her work in Defiance (2008), The Living and the Dead (2006) and The House of Eliott (1991). Kate has numerous theatre credits, most recently starring in A Lie of the Mind at Southwark Playhouse in 2017.

They are all delighted to be joining Matthew Kelly at Chester Cathedral this year, and the charity are very grateful to all the performers, who give up their time for free to support this wonderful cause. More names will be announced soon!
