A new study published in the European Journal of Internal Medicine has found that cannabis consumption among older adults with hypertension is associated with a drop in blood pressure.

The study was focused on patients aged 60 or older with hypertension and a medical cannabis prescription. Researchers monitored blood pressure, blood tests, electrocardiograms (ECG) and anthropometric measurements prior to the initiation of cannabis therapy and followed up three months afterward.

They found that cannabis treatment was associated with a reduction in 24-hours systolic and diastolic blood pressure values, with the largest reduction occurring three hours after cannabis administration.

Twenty-six patients took part in the study, with a mean age of 70.4. No significant changes were seen in the different metabolic parameters assessed by blood tests, anthropometric measurements, or ECG exams.

The research was conducted at IsraelsBen-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) and its affiliated Soroka University Medical Center and is believed to be the first of its kind that focuses on the effect of cannabis on blood pressure in older adults.

Older adults are the fastest growing group of medical cannabis users, yet evidence on cardiovascular safety for this population is scarce. This study is part of our ongoing effort to provide clinical research on the actual physiological effects of cannabis over time, Dr. Ran Abuhasira told News Medical.

The patients consumed cannabis either orally as oil or by smoking it.

According to News Medical, researchers theorize that the pain relief offered by cannabis may have contributed to the reduction in blood pressure.

A 2020 study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that medical cannabis is increasingly a treatment option pursued by those 60 and older. Nearly 570 adults participated in the study, and more than 60 per cent said they hadnt consumed cannabis until turning 60 or older.
