A father of three has launched a medical treatment fundraiser that he hopes will help fight his debilitating illness.

Darringtons Phil Swindin was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2004 and has suffered from major health problems ever since.

His symptoms have now worsened so that he cannot walk more than a meter without support and is dependent on caffeinated drinks for short bursts of energy.

He hopes to travel to a private facility in Mexico to receive a new type of treatment known as autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) that has been linked to improvements in MS.

Phil said: Life with MS is constant and terrifying as you become more and more disabled and everything you do very little can be done.

My MS symptoms fluctuated at the most inappropriate times and raised their ugly heads and restricted my normal physical or mental abilities.

It has caused huge hidden problems related to mobility, mental health, energy levels and so many other symptoms.

I long to do simple things like doing things with my kids, playing football or walking, but thats out of the question.

All other ways have failed. I have only one way to collect donations for private treatment.

Phil and his wife Alison started the fundraiser last month and have already raised more than 28,000.

The couple also hopes to organize a ball in the spring to improve funding.

Alison said, People were just wonderful. People we havent spoken to for years are in touch and their support words are fantastic.

It feels much more accessible than at the beginning. Were just trying to keep it moving and more and more things are happening.

Phils treatment is currently booked for April, but will have to be rescheduled if the money is not raised before that time.

Phil was also supported by Ackworths mother of two, Kate Dawson, who successfully completed the treatment in 2017 and described the results as life-changing.
