These and many other interesting insights come from the patent analysis research carried out by Swiss consulting firm EconSight, which first listed all the patents intended to protect particularly relevant inventions-in this case, described as innovations for the digitization of applied technology-using the PatentSight database. Companies must not only retain their creative strength; they must also continue to expand to take a leading position in the ranking compared to previous years.

Key results from EconSight's patent analysis report that identifies the world's most innovative companies include: 38 of the world's most innovative companies are headquartered in the U.S., 21 in China, and 15 in Europe. According to the uniqueness of patents made, Chinese followed by Japanese-based companies lead the world in electronics innovation. U.S. companies are leading the world in patent advances for medical technology. The following table compares the number of companies per country and sector for 2019 in the global top 100 list.

In the United States, tech firms dominate 2019's top 10 most disruptive firms. The most exclusive, distinguished and value-adding patents based on the methodology of EconSight were developed by Google, Qualcomm, Intel, Microsoft, Honeywell, Apple, and GE. Medical technology firms show the greatest growth in innovative patent development as shown in the chart below: the patent priority of the world's most advanced medical technology firms is on biosensors, surgical robotics, shortening pharmaceutical time-to-market, and financing start-up incubators that produce new patents.

The multi-faceted development strategy of Johnson & Johnson (J&J) represents the wider strategic vision of any medical technology organization seeking new IP leading to patent leadership. J&J purchased Auris Health and Verb Surgical, a joint venture with the Verily Medical Division of Alphabet, which provides them with a patent portfolio in healthcare technology. According to the study of PatentSight, J&J has acquired a total of over 300 companies in the medical technology industry. These acquisitions have pushed them into pharmaceutical research biosensors, surgical robotics and startups.
