ROCKPORT Many people may not give much thought to their mobility throughout a day.
Our feet carry us wherever we want to go, from puttering around the house to walking along the beach.
But this simple movement became challenging for Rose Rash, 62, a Rockport resident diagnosed just over 10 years ago with Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 1.
The progressive disease affects her movement, especially balance and coordination.
Now I can barely walk down the street, Rash said. The big thing for me is that I fall all the time.
However, Rashs mobility could soon be greatly improved, but not through conventional medical treatment. Rash is looking forward to the day next month when Billy, a standard poodle and trained service and stability dog, will accompany her throughout her day. And an upcoming Benefit for Billy in Rockport could help others in need of a service dog, as well.
Ive always been very active, Rash said earlier this week. One of the things I loved to do is ride my bike and go in the woods walking.
But this changed when Rash was handed the SCA1 diagnosis, according to a letter to the community from her kids Anna Rico and Jim and Tom Rash.
Rash said that because she used to fall once a week, her doctor has had her slow down. She has been moving with the help of a cane and her husband, Dave Rash.
Dave has been my knight in shining armor, Rash said.
