The Star Valley Independent has been covering the the varied communities of the are for 110 consecutive years without missing a single edition.  In that time, the newspaper has seen many things come and go and many items come back multiple times for discussion.  Take a look at what made the pages of the Independent this week of the calendar year 25, 50, 75 and 100 years ago.

25-years ago:

Four teams jockey for world position–Perfect cutter racing weather was enjoyed by large crowds Saturday as our home meets narrow down to the finals this weekend. . . . Kent Brown is sitting with a 23.40 average, and Valley Sprayers with a 23.42, Royce Hoopes picked up enough time to move into the third place with 23.85, while LinDee Hokanson retains fourth with 24.03. Horseshoe Inn has a 24.13 average and not a good run last week, so anything can still happen.

50-years ago:

New remote Control Lawn Mowers now being manufactured at Afton– A new and revolutionary project is now being manufactured at Afton it was revealed this week. Patented under the trade name “E-Z Kutr”, a remote control lawn mover is coming off an assemble line at the C.M. Haderlie building one half block west of Main Street. It is being done by four Star Valley men and one Salt Lake City man. . . . E-Z Kutr is a fully remote control eclectic power lawn mower, with which a person can sit in the shade, operate two simple switches with his thumbs and watch the mower do all the work of mowing the lawn. It can start, stop, reverse, turn mower right or left all at the flick of a simple switch. It can be used as far as 200 feet from the nearest electrical outlet and can cut approximately 200 square feet of lawn without the operator moving position.

75-years ago:

Afton grade school raise $50 for Flood Sufferers [in the Ohio and Mississippi Valleys] – The Afton grade school responded most liberally to the Red Cross call for flood relief funds. As an incentive the teachers are giving the winning room a peanut bust and free period on the gym floor.

Old Resident Visits–T.R. Jenkins of Robertson, Wyo, was a visitor in the Valley Wednesday and today. He greatly enjoyed meeting a number of old friends in the Valley. Ralph is an old resident of Auburn, but moved away about 25 years ago. He is operating a store at Robertson, near Fort Bridger at present.

We understand that there is a strong sentiment in favor of another Fair being held this Fall, and that a committee will be appointed in the near future to take charge of it.

Howard, the oldest son of Geo. Hemmert, was pushed out of a sleigh as they were leaving school the other night and his head struck a bolt and a very bad cut was inflicted. He was taken to Mrs. Roberts for medical treatment as soon as possible.
