All of us most likely have relatives or know someone suffering from or having died of cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) diseases. Heart diseases have been the number one killer worldwide for at least two decades.

In Indonesia, the death of actor Mochamad Syariful Zanah, or Cecep Reza, 31, in November is likely the most recent popular example of how cardiovascular disease may suddenly take one`s life without any advance warning.

The latest Indonesian Basic Health Survey (Riskesdas), conducted in 2018, revealed that smoking among adolescents, alcohol consumption and physical inactivity or a sedentary lifestyle have all been consistently increasing since 2012.

Therefore, without any serious intervention, the chilling fact is that more Indonesians will die of cardiovascular diseases in the next few years.
