Newswise Schaumburg, IL, Sept. 16, 2013 The Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) will address the latest developments in traumatic brain injury (TBI), neuromodulation and stroke at three new Innovation and Technology Symposia. The meetings will take place during the CNS Annual Meeting, October 19-23, 2013, at the Moscone West Convention Center in San Francisco. The sessions will offer neurosurgeons the opportunity to collaborate on new technologies and innovations fueling the advancement of neurosurgery in three critical treatment areas.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Oct. 19, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Course Directors: Raj K. Narayan, MD and Jack Jallo, MD CME Credits: 6

This session will feature world-renowned TBI expert Julian E. Bailes, Jr., MD, Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery and Co-Director of the NorthShore University HealthSystem Neurological Institute in suburban Chicago, and also a former NFL and NCAA team physician. Along with other highly accomplished TBI specialists, Dr. Bailes will discuss the alarming escalation of TBI, especially among athletes and the military. In recent years, news coverage shows that even celebrities, including George Clooney, Gary Busey, Brett Michaels and Natasha Richardson, have suffered from TBI.

In the past decade, researchers have learned more about concussions and other head injuries than ever before, said Dr. Bailes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 1.7 million TBIs occur annually, and TBI is a contributing factor to a third of all injury-related deaths in the United States.

The TBI session will present current controversies relating to the surgical and non-surgical treatment of TBI in adults, including dialogue about concussions and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a condition suffered by numerous former professional athletes who have endured repeated head injuries. New monitoring techniques and promising new therapies for TBI will also be discussed.

This symposium is being presented with the generous support of Codman & Shurtleff and Integra LifeSciences. Throughout the day, these companies will offer members hands-on demonstrations and workshops using the latest technology to treat patients experiencing Traumatic Brain Injury.

Neuromodulation 2013: What Every Neurosurgeon Needs to Know Oct. 20, 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Course Directors: Michael G. Kaplitt, MD and Parag G. Patil, MD CME Credits: 6

This session will discuss one of the fastest-growing areas of neurosurgery, with presentations ranging from the most advanced research in the field to current state-of-the-art therapies for pain, movement disorders, epilepsy and psychiatric conditions. Focused upon practical knowledge and insights for community neurosurgeons and those in training, this session will integrate clinical applications and financial considerations into a comprehensive view of the neuromodulation field.

This is a terrific opportunity for neurosurgeons to not only learn about the latest therapies, but to gain an understanding of how to integrate them both from a clinical and financial point-of-view into their everyday practices, said Ashwini D. Sharan, MD, Scientific Program Chairman of the CNS Annual Meeting.

The most recent technological developments for neuromodulation therapies will be covered, including spinal stimulation, intrathecal drug delivery and deep brain stimulation, as well as future therapeutic areas such as neural ablation, patient-responsive neuromodulation, optogenetics, gene therapies and neuroprosthetics.
