TRENTON, N.J., March 17, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --The United States Brain Injury Alliance (USBIA) stands with Congressmen Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-N.J.) to support his introduction of the National Brain Injury Research and Treatment Act of 2014.

The proposed legislation, which is co-sponsored by U.S. Rep. Thomas Rooney, (R-F.L.), will require the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to create a national system to keep track of how often traumatic brain injuries (TBI) happen to help researchers develop ways to prevent and treat brain injuries.

"I couldn't be prouder of the leadership of Congressman Pascrell," states Barbara Geiger-Parker, Chair of USBIA and President and CEO of the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey. "We have worked closely with the Congressman who is the founding Co-Chair of the Congressional Brain Injury Task Force. His dedication to this issue is unparalleled."

According to the CDC, an estimated 1.7 million people sustain a TBI each year, making it a contributing factor to a third (30.5%) of all injury-related deaths in the United States.

"Collecting widespread data will help to develop a seamless, standardized evidence-based system of care for the millions of Americans who sustain brain injuries every year," states Gavin Attwood, Vice Chair of USBIA and Executive Director of the Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado.

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. Help raise awareness about brain injuries by downloading informational materials at http://www.usbia.org/events/awareness.
