Vestal High School Students Put Together Chemistry Magic Show

Some high school kids are putting a spin on learning chemistry.

Vestal High School puts on a chemistry magic show four times during the school year for students in African Road, Clayton, Vestal Hills and Tioga Hills Elementary schools.

The show is not your average chemistry lesson.

It's Elizabeth Dobell's last year participating in the Vestal High School's chemistry magic show.

"I remember when i was in elementary school and coming and seeing the show and so now to be a apart of it...it's all about encouraging younger students to be excited about science and that it's not all facts and numbers and everything but it can be really exciting so the whole thing is its not really magic it's chemistry," said Dobell.

All chemistry students are required to take safety certification training courses prior to preparing for the show.

The show includes music, dancing, and some pretty impressive tricks.

"I like when they lit their hands on fire because I thought it was cool that they could lit their hands on fire but it went out before it touched their hand," said 4th grade elementary school student Jeremy Sager.

Students performed a little trick called Methane Mamba.

"We dip our hands in a bucket of water and wet it and then we pick up bubbles full of methane. And so then we light our hands on fire so the gas burns but the water acts as a sink and absorbs all the heat," said Dobell.
