Cane toad detection dog Reggie is being mistreated, his former handler claims.

The sniffer dog sent to the Kimberley region to fight cane toads invading Western Australia has been mistreated, according to both the president of Kimberley Toad Busters and the animal's former handler.

The president of the community group, Lee Scott-Virtue,also said the state government had squandered funds and misled the community in its failed attempt to stop the pests heading further south.

Cane toad poison affects the nervous system.

But the government has denied the accusations, saying the conditions in which the dog was being kept met all requirements.

Ms Scott-Virtue is worried about the health of Reggie the sniffer dog, sent to the state's north to fight the poisonous amphibians earlier this year.

"The treatment of Reggie has been absolutely appalling," she said

"The previous handler has reported abuse and concern.

"She is terribly upset."
