Eau Claire, Wis, (WEAU) -- On Saturday morning, SkyWarn13 Meteorologist Monica Ott served as the emcee for Eau Claires Walk MS.

Walk MS is scheduled to take place in 20 communities throughout Wisconsin in 2014, including Saturday morning in Eau Claire on the UW-Eau Claire campus.

There is no registration fee, but Walk MS participants are encouraged to make a donation or fundraiser. More than $1.3 million was raised through Walk MS events in Wisconsin last year. The money supports MS-related research, programs and services.

More than 10,000 children, women and men in Wisconsin are known to be diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which is believed to be one of the higher prevalence rates in the nation.

More About Walk MS

Walk MS is a volunteer-driven event coordinated by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Each location features accessible routes for wheelchairs and scooters, rest stops, first aid and more. It is the largest annual fundraiser of the National MS Society-Wisconsin Chapter.

About Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide. More than 10,000 children, women and men have been diagnosed in Wisconsin, believed to be one of the higher prevalence rates in the nation.
