People buying illegal drugs over the internet have been warned they will be caught and prosecuted.

The warning from police comes after a man was sentenced last week at Christchurch District Court for importing drugs through an overseas website.

Simon Lim, 27, was prosecuted under the Misuse of Drugs Act after customs officials linked him to packages containing small quantities of drugs which were intercepted at the International Mail Centre a year ago.

The packages contained cocaine, methamphetamine, LSD, hashish, ketamine and cannabis.

Lim was sentenced to 18 months supervision after pleading guilty to importing Class A, Class B and Class C drugs, as well as possession of a Class C drug and possession of a utensil used to consume controlled drugs.

"This prosecution should serve as a warning to anyone who thinks they can buy illegal drugs online for personal use and get away with it," said customs manager investigations, Mark Day.

"We will not hesitate to prosecute, no matter what the quantity."

He said police are increasingly coming across people ordering drugs online, and said such websites are monitored.
