A RETIRED woman who was hit by a car in a supermarket car park died of a brain injury, an inquest heard.

Susan Stanford, of Borley Road, Poole, was taken to Poole Hospital following the incident on Friday, September 18.

The 69-year-old was transferred to Southampton General Hospital but her condition deteriorated and she died on Saturday, September 26.

An inquest into Ms Stanfords death was opened on Tuesday by assistant coroner for Dorset Brendan Allen.

During a hearing at Bournemouth Town Hall, coroners officer Nicola Muller said: This lady was taken to the emergency department at Poole Hospital having been hit by a car in a supermarket car park.

A trauma CT showed a severe head injury and she was transferred to University Hospital Southampton on September 18, 2020.

A further CT head scan showed worsening head injuries, including swellings and haemorrhages, Ms Muller said.

She added: It was discussed with the family that due to the severity of the injury the prognosis was very poor and it was agreed that active treatment was no longer appropriate.

She was extubated and passed away on September 26, 2020.

The hearing was told that Ms Stanford was married and had worked as a retail assistant before her retirement.

No post-mortem examination took place, but a provisional cause of death was given as traumatic brain injury.

The coroner requested statements from Ms Stanfords family and from police regarding their investigation.

Mr Allen adjourned the inquest until March next year when a review hearing will take place.

As reported, a female pedestrian was involved in a collision with a silver Vauxhall Insignia in the car park of Asda in West Quay Road, Poole, shortly after 2pm on September 18.

A 39-year-old man from Poole voluntarily attended a police station for interview on suspicion of driving offences and was released under investigation.
